FEATURED WINERY: “MACCHIA”
“IT’S ALL GOOD!”
To kick off my wine section of WineFood 24-7, it is only apropos that I choose the winery where I discovered the wonderful flavors of the Zinfandel wines of Lodi.
“MACCHIA” is a woman-owned and family run winery. In Italian, the word MACCHIA means “The Spot”. Their specialty is Zinfandel, but their Italian varietals have also won prestigious awards.
The owner, Lani Jean, has a strong team that makes MACCHIA a fun and enjoyable winery to visit. Lani’s lovely and talented daughter, Tanya, is the General Manager, and Johnathan, Lani’s son, the creative winemaker. Additionally, the exuberant pouring experts in the tasting room make this one of the great experiences in the region. Each quarter the team hosts a themed release party for club members.
In addition to the varietal designation, every MACCHIA wine has a special name comprised of an adjective with the suffix “OUS”.
So where did the idea come from? The story goes that the first wine they created was a Zinfandel. After Lani tasted it several times she said it made her feel “Adventurous!”
So as each wine was created it stimulated the mind and taste buds to say… “Delicious”, “Luxurious”, “Prestigious” and my favorite, “Mischievous”, and so on.
MACCHIA picks only small lots of the finest grapes possible from the most respected wine growing vineyards in this region; California’s “Best Spots”. Their approach toward wine making is to enhance the vineyard’s personality.
MACCHIA’s “Prestigious” Zinfandel comes from “The Original Grandpere Vineyard”. It is a 140-year-old vineyard, located in the Shenandoah Valley in Amador County. It is possibly the oldest producing Zinfandel vineyard in the United States.
MACCHIA’s “Adventurous” Zinfandel, “Righteous” Barbera, and “Dangerous” Port all come from the Linsteadt Vineyard, also located in Amador County. The grapes from this vineyard are known to produce a “Peppery” finish.
MACCHIA’s grounds are beautiful, and there’s often music on the weekend. Bring a picnic lunch, sit back and enjoy Bocce, horseshoes or just hang out and drink great wine.
MACCHIA is near and dear to my heart as we were the first customers and club members when their wines were still in the barrels. We bought futures and as a result we are still club members to this day!
